Kingdom of Madness: Classic Magnum
Members of MAGNUM's classic-era line-ups and other top-drawer rock alumni unite to perform Classic Magnum songs from the celebrated 1978-94 period.
Mark Stanway (keyboards), Micky Barker (drums), Richard Bailey (keyboards/flute), and Mo Birch (vocals/percussion), all of whom have previously performed with Magnum, provide the nucleus of Kingdom of Madness. For their 2020/21 shows they are joined by vocalist Tony Martin, best known for his decade spent fronting Black Sabbath, bassist Brian Badhams (Bernie Marsden's Alaska, Steve Gibbons Band) and guitarist Alan Bell.
One of the UK's finest exponents of melodic rock music, Magnum achieved high album and singles chart positions in both the UK and Europe and gained a reputation as one of the UK most captivating live bands.
"There was an extensive catalogue of great songs from the classic years of Magnum which had not been performed on stage in many years and which audiences have been screaming out for" says Mark Stanway, keyboard player with Magnum for 36 years.
Micky Barker and Richard Bailey, both members of Magnum's classic-era line-ups, didn't take much persuading to get involved: "This decision was easy," says Bailey. "It was obvious the fans would welcome the chance to hear some of their favourite classic Magnum songs and we all have the essential mutual respect for each other's musical ability."
Barker adds: "Blowing the dust off some of the old CD's and DVD's from my time with Magnum, the idea of playing some of Tony Clarkin's finest songs again became increasingly appealing."
Vocalist Tony Martin says "It's great to be able to give another life to some well-loved songs".
This reunion of former members of one the UK's most revered melodic rock bands to perform music that has touched the hearts of several generations of music fans has been met with the highest acclaim from both music critics and audiences alike:
"Pure and simple, this was a triumph for all concerned," wrote Andy Rawll at Metal Talk. "This was no pale imitation of an inimitable band. This incredible group of musicians showed their respect of the legacy of Magnum. The beauty was in the verve and euphoria of an unfettered performance, delivered with style, that delighted those in the crowd, as much as it did those on stage."
David Randall at Get Ready to Rock added: "This really was a night of Magnum nostalgia and – perhaps more than a Magnum gig – an evocative celebration of the band's heritage."

Guitar hero Bernie Marsden is one of rock's true legends.
The rock and blues guitarist co-wrote some of Whitesnake's biggest hits, including Fool For Your Loving and the million-selling charttopper Here I Go Again. He played on the band's first five albums. Bernie is one of rock's great raconteurs and tells an astonishing story in his autobiography: Where's My Guitar. And he will tell tall tales about turning down Paul McCartney and encounters with Ringo Starr, Elton John, Cozy Powell, BB King and Jon Lord. He'll be playing songs, answering fans' questions and talking about the way he shaped the golden age of rock'n'roll.
There'll be a meet'n'greet with book signing at every show.
Hailed by critics and fans alike as a one of the finest songwriters of his generation, Dean Friedman has achieved legendary, pop-icon status for chart-topping hits, Ariel, Lucky Stars, Lydia, McDonald’s Girl and more.

He’s also published a respected tome on the art and craft of songwriting titled, ‘The Songwriter’s Handbook’, based on songwriting workshops and songwriting masterclasses he’s conducted at universities and music conservatories around the world, including L.I.P.A. (the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts).

Against the backdrop of a universally difficult 2020, songwriter and guitarist John Smith found himself facing personal and unrelenting change. In the spring of 2020, Smith and his wife lost a pregnancy, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. With his touring schedule of two hundred days a year on the road suddenly on indefinite hiatus, for the first time in over a decade, John was home.
"With newfound pain coming from so many directions, dealing with the uncertainty it brings, I closed the curtains and picked up the pen, turning to songwriting as a lifeline." It's unsurprising that the new songs reflect a shift in priorities. On his new album ‘The Fray', Smith gives us an uplifting perspective on the path forward, but pays beautiful homage to the difficulties along the way.
‘The Fray' is Smith's sixth studio album, and his vulnerability throughout is offered to his listeners, unadorned. "It's been a hell of a year, but I feel I've created my most honest work as a result, and as a necessity. A lot of these songs are about accepting that life is hard, but just holding on and trying to enjoy it anyway." Smith's stubborn optimism in tough circumstances shines through on the title track, in which he sings "Holding onto hope / I don't need a decent reason / Yes and though it disappears sometimes / It returns with every season".
Smith co-produced ‘The Fray' with long-time friend and producer Sam Lakeman. They recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studio, with pianist Jason Rebello (Sting, John Mayer), bass player Ben Nicholls (Seth Lakeman, Nadine Shah), drummer Jay Sikora (Paolo Nutini) and Jessica Staveley-Taylor of The Staves. The album is a true reflection of the times, with American collaborators Sarah Jarosz, Courtney Hartman, The Milk Carton Kids and Bill Frisell recording remotely and sending contributions over international borders. John's frequent touring partner Lisa Hannigan contributed via a virtual studio session in Dublin.
Smith co-wrote a couple of songs for the album whilst on tour before the pandemic. Driving a rental car from Asheville to Nashville, John stopped to write the standout track ‘Eye to Eye' with North Carolina-based Sarah Siskind. The Americana influence is a red thread throughout the album which beautifully compliments Smith's unmistakeable British Folk roots.
Smith was born in Essex and raised on the Devon seaside. Known for his intimate songwriting, his honey-on-gravel voice and pioneering guitar playing, he has spent the last fifteen years touring internationally and has amassed over 40 million streams on Spotify. As a session musician he has played guitar with artists as diverse as Joan Baez, David Gray, Joe Henry, Lianne La Havas and Tom Jones.

1970 would prove to be a vintage year for music and the start of an era that would change the world.
For Steeleye Span – formed the year before - it would mark a major milestone. The band released their debut album Hark The Village Wait, a record that would not only launch one of the most enduring stories in the folk world and beyond but also come to influence further generations of artists.
Five decades on and the band, led as ever by the iconic vocals of Maddy Prior and with a seven piece line-up featuring some of the most skilled musicians on the UK folk scene, their 50th anniversary tour will be a celebration of the key tracks from that famous album as well as favourites and gems from their long and famous career.
